Why Brazilian Jiu Jitsu's Uniqueness Is Great For People Who Practice It

Brazilian jiu-jitsu (also commonly referred to as simply BJJ) is a unique martial art that has piqued the interest of many people around the world since it started becoming popularised in UFC and other fighting competitions. There are several distinct advantages that BJJ provides its users when compared to common martial arts like karate. If you are looking for a fun but different form of martial art that will keep you on your toes at all times and also turn your body into an experienced and responsive fighting machine, then here are a few reasons why Brazilian jiu-jitsu is perfect for you.

No Striking

Almost every other martial art is based on striking your opponent. It might be striking your opponent with your feet, hands, knee, head or elbow, but most follow the same basic principle — that striking is the easiest way to submit someone. In BJJ, striking is not used at all; instead, the focus is on reducing the space between the two of you and then grappling with them until you have the upper hand. You will learn a lot of different positions in which you can submit someone and also learn how to use your weight and frame to your advantage. Everyone can get lucky with a random punch or kick, but if your adversary doesn't know how to grapple with someone, as most don't, then BJJ will defeat most people easily.

Less Painful On Your Body

Because a lot of BJJ is wrestling and grappling on the ground, you do not get those same, high-impact injuries that you do from striking martial arts. While you may feel a tiny bit of pain when you practice submissions on each other, tapping out instantly stops this, and no one is there trying to hurt each other. People are very mindful of when to stop and when they can push the boundaries, and at the end of it all, you get a great workout with very little chance of injuries like you do with other contact sports and martial arts.

Coping Under Pressure

An often underrated benefit of BJJ is how it teaches you to remain calm and composed when you are in the most primal state you can be in; wrestling and grappling with someone. BJJ is like a pressure cooker, and while it may take time for you to learn to think and focus when there are so many visceral distractions in a sparring match, it will make you a stronger and more resilient person. Often, these characteristics, such as patience and being cool under pressure, transfer into your daily and professional life as well.
